CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Kassidy

I never, ever, ever want to stop kissing Lucas Reardon.

This is what I’m thinking as I tighten my arms around his neck and press my lips against his. We’re on my balcony, as usual, and while it’s a little cold, I don’t feel anything but the warmth between us.

“I saw you playing soccer today,” he says in between kisses.

I pull back a few inches. “You did?”

“You’re really good.”

“I thought I told you that already,” I tease.

Lucas smiles. “You looked like you were having fun. Like you really love the game.”

“I do. It’s the one thing I’m really good at,” I tell him, and I hope I don’t sound conceited in any way because that’s not my intention. “It’s the one thing that’s really mine. No one can take it away from me.”

His brow creases. “Why would someone try to take it away from you? I don’t understand.”

I purse my lips. Where do I begin? The explanation seems long and tedious and the last thing I want to talk about right now. Instead, I kiss Lucas one more time, long and slow, to the point that I’m a little lightheaded when I’m finally able to pull back.

“Are you trying to distract me so you don’t have to answer my question?” Lucas breathes. “Because I’m totally fine with that.”

I slide my hands down the sleeves of his sweatshirt, my fingertips skimming his biceps and forearms. “Is it working?”

He grunts out a laugh. “Oh, yeah. It’s definitely working.” Lucas’ hands move to cup my face and his next kiss is oh-so-good that I am literally lost in it; so deeply submerged by his touch that when he draws back, I’m disappointed by the few inches of space that simple motion leaves between us.

“I watched some of the team scrimmage. What’s up with Danielle shoving you?”

It doesn’t take me more than a second to connect his words with my memories of practice. “We get a little a competitive, that’s all. Don’t tell me you’re practicing manners on the football field.”

“No. Definitely not.” Lucas strokes my cheek. “It’s just, I didn’t like what I saw, that’s all.”

“I’m a big girl, Lucas. I can handle this,” I say. “It’s not like I haven’t had to deal with this stuff before.”

“What are you talking about?”

I can’t for the life of me figure out why this is a big deal to him. I shrug, trying to align my thoughts for an explanation that will get his attention off my run-in with Danielle and back to kissing me.

“My mom and I moved around a lot when I was younger,” I say. “I was constantly having to start over, always having to prove myself. To teachers, to coaches, to everyone.”

Lucas runs a hand over his head. “That must’ve been hard.”

“It was. But soccer has been the one constant in my life. The one place where I fit, where I don’t have to pretend. When I step onto the field, all I have to do is be myself and my skills speak for themselves.
